This instructional article is designed to guide you through the process of installing your new lighting fixture using the surface mounting method. This method is suitable for when you want to run the fixture wires either behind the fixture or along the surface. Follow these steps carefully to ensure a successful installation.

Step 1: Planning Wire Passage

1. Before starting, ensure the power supply is turned off at the breaker to avoid electrical hazards.
2. Decide on the most convenient location for the wire passage. If you prefer to run the wires behind the fixture, you'll need to drill a hole in the mounting surface large enough for the socket wires to pass through. For wires running along the surface, you'll utilize the “D” shaped knock-out hole on the cover piece.

Step 2: Preparing the Cover Piece

1. If wiring behind the fixture, drill a hole in the surface at the desired location to match the alignment of the knock-out in the cover piece. Side knockouts are available as well. 
2. For surface wiring, punch out the “D” shaped knock-out on the cover piece. This will allow the wires to exit the cover piece and run along the surface.

Step 3: Mounting the Cover Piece

1. Position the cover piece on the surface where the fixture will be mounted. Align it so the hole or knock-out permits proper wire passage.
2. Use the screws provided to secure the cover piece to the surface. Ensure it is firmly attached and level.

Step 4: Wiring the Fixture

1. Feed the fixture wires through the prepared hole or knock-out in the cover piece.
2. Take the wires from the transformer and connect them to the fixture wires using the wire nuts provided. Ensure a secure connection by twisting the wire nuts tightly, making sure no bare wire is exposed.

Step 5: Installing the Fixture

1. Locate the springs on either side of the fixture. These are designed to hold the fixture in place against the cover piece.
2. Compress the springs and carefully insert the fixture into the back cover. Make sure the springs are properly aligned to allow them to expand and secure the fixture in place.
3. Adjust the fixture as necessary to ensure it is securely mounted and properly aligned.

Final Steps:

1. After installation, turn the power back on at the breaker and test the fixture to confirm it operates correctly.
2. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the fixture is securely in place and the wires are neatly organized.
