Maintaining your lighting doesn't take much time, but it pays off with brighter lights and beautiful fixtures. Regular maintenance maximizes light output and keeps your fixtures looking great.
Clean Fixtures Properly
- Polished Metal, Painted Fixtures, and Glass:
- Remove glass shades and hand wash them.
- Dry polish and dust all metal, painted, and wood parts.
- Dry fixtures and glass thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.
- Cloth Shades:
- Dust with a new makeup brush or microfiber cloth.
- For washable shades, clean in a bathtub with lukewarm water and mild liquid laundry soap.
- Wipe solid areas from top to bottom with a clean white cotton cloth.
- Rinse in clean lukewarm water and blot with an absorbent towel.
- Things to Avoid:
- Do not use dishwashers for glass shades.
- Avoid abrasive cloths, cleaners, and products with ammonia or alcohol.
- Stay away from general-purpose household window or glass cleaners.
Other Fixture Maintenance
- LED Tape Lighting: Use a dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth if covered by a lens.
- Downlights, Recessed, and Ceiling Fixtures: Use a slightly damp cloth on the acrylic diffuser, followed by a dry cloth.
- Ceiling Fans: Clean finishes and glass like decorative fixtures, using a dry cloth around vent openings.
- Landscape Lighting Fixtures: Clean to remove debris and use gentle soap and water if needed.
Make a Schedule
- Weekly: Dust and clean ceiling fan bulbs, blades, downlights, and flush or semi-flush lighting with a long-handle duster and step ladder.
- Twice a Year: Clean chandeliers and other fixtures during spring and fall cleaning.
Adding lighting maintenance to your routine will keep your home shining brightly.
